Camphor, or most commonly known as kapur in Hindi is a derived from the wood of camphor tree (Cinnamomum Camphora). It is widely used in India for its medicinal properties and for religious purposes. It is a crystal-like, white compound that has a strong aroma and taste. Camphor was also used historically for treatment of Black Death as a fumigant due to its powerful fragrance. 

 

 

Common names of Camphor

 

Kapur : As known in Hindi and most commonly in India
Cinnamomum Camphora : The botanical name of Camphor
Borneo camphor: most commonly known as Bhimseni Camphor. Bhimseni Camphor or bhimseni kapoor is known for its high purity and is used in religious rituals and medicinal properties. 

 

 

Uses of Camphor in Ayurveda :

 

In Ayurvedic texts, camphor is known as “Karpura” and is known for its potent healing properties. It is also classified as Katu Rasa or one with pungent taste and has a cooling effect. The use of Camphor in Ayurveda has been widespread and often 

 

Ayurvedic text also emphasises the benefits of Camphor or Kapur for the respiratory system. It is used as a vapour rub for relief from cough and cold. 


It is also used to balance the kapha and Pitta dosha and helps in reducing congestion, inflammation, and infections. 
It is also cooling nature, making it unique as despite being a coolant, it helps balance the Kapha dosha. 
It also helps reduce fat and reduce pain and aches that arise due to imbalance of the Vata dosha. 
Camphor is also widely used in spiritual and religous practices.

 

 

 

Benefits and Uses of Camphor or Kapoor

 

Camphor benefits for Skin :


It helps control inflammation of skin.
It has a soothing effect on the skin. It helps in relieving itchiness of the skin. 
Many beauty products also use camphor as it helps in creation of collagen and elastin. 
It controls skin rashes and outbreak, if applied locally on affected area
It effectively treats acne and acne scars. However, it should be used with a carrier oil such as coconut oil or olive oil. 
Camphor can also be used for treating cracked heel by soaking your feet in warm water and using camphor for gentle scrubbing. Make sure to use lotion, oil or petroleum jelly to provide moisture to your heels after the scrub. 

 

 

 

Camphor benefits for Pain :


It is great for pain alleviation as it desensitises nerve endings and produces a warm sensation. 
It can be used topically or by ingestion for the same. But, doctor advice should be taken for this. 
Camphor is also good for headaches. Use camphor essential oil or camphor oil as a balm to get relief from head pains. 
It reduces inflammation and swelling and thus, is good for arthritis. 
Its analgesic properties help relieve muscle and joint pain.

It is also effective in treating dandruff. It can be applied on the scalp with coconut oil to get the desired effect. 
It stimulates blood circulation in the scalp and promotes hair growth and reduces hair loss. 
It is also very good for eliminating lice due to its aroma and antibacterial properties.

Precautions

Keep it out of the reach of pets. 
Store it in a cool, dry place, away from heat and direct sunlight. 


Note : Camphor also has some toxicity concerns, especially if ingested in large quantities. It can be fatal in such situations.
